At The Bike Shed Company, we focus on security, durability, good looks and usability. Those principles are evident in everything we do, including the care with which we design and make our lids.
Good materials. Skillful Construction.
We start each lid with a sturdy frame, made from sustainably sourced Douglas Fir. That gives the lid the stability and durability it needs. It’s also important to us that our timber is attractive and responsibly harvested.
We use premium rated plywood for the body of the lid. We then cover the lid using EPDM rubber. Typically, sheds are covered using roofing felt. But roofing felt ages quickly, dries out, cracks and becomes tatty and permeable. After a few years it will need replacing and can only be landfilled.
EPDM on the other hand is known for durability and weather resistance (take a look at what Wikipedia has to say). With an expected lifespan of 30-50 years, it protects and continues to look new for the long term, under far more challenging conditions than required for a bike shed.
Finally, to maintain the overall aesthetic of the shed, the lid is trimmed with Douglas Fir, tying-in the appearance of the lid to the look and feel of the main body of the shed.
Ergonomics Matter!
Unlike other bike shed builders, we make our lids hinged so that they can be lifted. And we add gas struts which makes them easy to lift. This makes the whole shed easy and comfortable to use. A Pedalbase 4, is over a meter deep but only 1.34 meters high. If the lid didn’t lift, you would need to crouch, possibly even get down on one knee to retrieve the bike at the back. Instead, because our lids do lift, you’ll be able to reach and move all of your bikes, including those at the back, while standing naturally. We guarantee that you’ll enjoy using our shed far more than an alternative with a fixed lid.
A Lid that Locks
The security of your shed is critical and our lid design plays an important role in keeping your bikes safe. When you open the shed doors, the lid lifts to give you access. When you close the doors, the lid drops over the top of the doors and holds them in place.
Top That!
Once you understand how we design and make our lids, you can see what matters to us: security, durability, good looks and usability. When you choose a shed from The Bike Shed Company, you’re choosing a product that truly raises the bar—top that!
